WHAT IS SINGLES DAY?
The so-called Singles Day is celebrated annually on November 11. It is officially a Chinese holiday where singles can show their pride in being single. It is also partlywidespread in Europe.
HOW DID IT ALL BEGIN?
It all started as a paean to singledom, when Chinese singles students at Nanjing University, chose November 11, 1993 (11.11. looks like four single sticks strung together trying to make the most of their time) to celebrate rather than complain about being partnerless. The anti-Valentine’s Day celebration of being single quickly evolved into a fun, unofficial holiday where singles across China treat themselves to a nice dinner and splurge on items they wouldn’t otherwise buy for themselves. For example, one student reserved every other seat in a movie theater and forbade couples from sitting next to each other during a screening of Beijing Love-Story, an aptly named romantic film.
From these humble beginnings, Singles Day has now become the world’s most lucrative online shopping holiday. In 2017, it generated $25 billion in sales, easily surpassing even Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined. The holiday may have become commercialized, but the festivities and theme are still in keeping with its founding – to celebrate who you are, regardless of relationship status.
